Laboratory Directors Group
The large particle physics laboratories (LPPLs) of the CERN Member States and Associate Member States (both regular and in the pre-stage to Membership) play an important role in European particle physics. Their resources, infrastructure and technical capabilities are necessary for the implementation of most large-scale projects in the field. The Large Particle Physics Laboratory Directors Group (LDG) provides a forum in which the directors of LPPLs and CERN can communicate and discuss their laboratories’ respective strategies, projects and priorities, with the aim of maximising cooperation in the planning, preparation and execution of future projects.
Mandate
The LDG is charged by the CERN Council to:
- facilitate informal dialogue among the Directors of the LPPLs and CERN;
- provide direct input to the European Strategy for Particle Physics;
- liaise with the European Commission and national funding agencies, research institutes and universities in order to ensure that the LPPLs speak with a single voice;
- maximise the regional and national benefits of investment in fundamental research and in CERN;
- keep abreast of relevant activities being undertaken in laboratories outside CERN’s Member and Associate Member States, as well as of other coordinating groups in particle physics and related fields, and foster dialogue with them;
- draw up and maintain a prioritised accelerator R&D roadmap towards future large-scale facilities for particle physics (defined further in Addendum A);
- oversee the accelerator R&D activities on the roadmap, with the aim of strengthening cooperation and ensuring effective use of complementary capabilities.
Reporting Lines
The LDG reports on its activities on a regular basis to the CERN Council and, where appropriate, to the latter’s scientific advisory body, the Scientific Policy Committee.
